BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said Bangladesh’s tradition of communal harmony and brotherhood will continue for generations.
“This unbreakable bond of harmony will endure for ages. We will continue to practise and nurture this bond together,” he said on Tuesday.
Rizvi made the remarks after paying tribute at the graves of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia at Zia Udyan in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.
Members of the Hindu, Buddhist and Christian Welfare Trusts accompanied him during the visit.
Rizvi said harmony and brotherhood are deeply rooted in Bangladesh’s soil and have played an important role in shaping the country’s national identity.
He said the concept of Bangladeshi nationalism, introduced by Ziaur Rahman, gave philosophical form to that identity.
“Within this framework, every religious community and every ethnic group has a place. There is space for everyone, and everyone can proudly say that we are Bangladeshis,” he said.
Rizvi said separate trusts had been formed for the Hindu, Christian and Buddhist communities to oversee the management and maintenance of their temples and other places of worship.
He said the trusts would help ensure that priests, devotees and worshippers can carry out their religious activities peacefully.
Rizvi said the trusts are headed and managed by qualified individuals from the respective communities, who will oversee and review their activities.
He also said members of the Hindu, Christian and Buddhist communities hold important leadership positions within the BNP.
“They are not representatives of their respective religious communities alone; rather, they provide leadership to the entire nation within the BNP,” he said.
