A suspended Ansar member was hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Basail, Tangail. Police have arrested two people in connection with the killing.
The incident took place around 9pm on Tuesday in the Bilpara area of Habla Union in the upazila. The deceased, Hanif Khan, 40, was the son of freedom fighter Baktar Ali Khan of Habla Uttarpara village in the upazila.
According to local sources, Hanif was returning home from Bilpara market on Tuesday night when a group of assailants attacked him with sharp locally made weapons, hacking him indiscriminately before fleeing the scene.
Locals later rescued him in critical condition and took him to the General Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
That night, Hanif’s wife, Monira Sultana, filed a murder case naming 20 people and accusing another five to six unidentified individuals.
Confirming the matter, Basail Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Alamgir Kabir said a murder case had been filed and two people had been arrested following the complaint.
“The deceased’s body is at the morgue. Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused,” he said.
