Police have arrested six people, including the younger brother of Wari’s listed criminal Sajol alias Auto Sajol, and recovered four foreign-made pistols, three magazines and 12 rounds of ammunition from Swamibagh in Dhaka.
The arrests followed a police operation that began with information about a suspected drug shipment being brought to the capital from Chattogram.
The six arrested are Md Sajib, 28, Sajol’s younger brother; Md Himu, 32; Md Tushar, 25; Md Joy, 25; Md Tutul, 33; and Md Imran, 34.
DMP Joint Commissioner (Crime) Md Faruk Hossain disclosed the details at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Monday.
Police received information on Sunday that illegal drugs were being transported to Dhaka in a private car. A team from Jatrabari Police set up a checkpost near Mukti Filling Station at the Matuail U-turn.
Around 4:30pm, officers stopped a white private car and searched it. Five people inside were detained, but no drugs were found.
During questioning, the detainees told police that drugs had been kept in a flat in Koratitola, Swamibagh. Police later raided the flat around 9:30pm and recovered the firearms and ammunition from a plastic bag hidden under a bed, based on information provided by Sajib and Himu.
One more person was arrested during the raid. Police also seized the private car and six mobile phones.
Police said preliminary information suggests Sajib is the younger brother of Sajol, who is listed as a top criminal and arms and drug dealer in the Wari area.
Sajol had previously been arrested on June 18 in Sayedabad following a tip-off. Police later raided his rented house in Swamibagh based on information obtained from him and recovered two Taurus pistols, four magazines, 77 rounds of ammunition, 59 grams of heroin, materials used to make heroin, Tk 22,960 in suspected drug-sale proceeds and four mobile phones.
