The death toll from devastating floods near the Nepal-China border has climbed to 750, while more than 3,000 people remain missing as rescue operations entered their fifth day, authorities in Nepal and Tibet said Sunday.
Nepal reported 734 deaths and 2,498 missing, up from 2,426 missing in its previous update. Among those still unaccounted for are 589 foreigners and 933 workers from hydropower projects along the affected river corridor.
Rescue teams have so far brought 8,186 people to safety in Nepal, including 227 foreigners, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.
Across the border in Tibet, Chinese state media reported 16 deaths and 546 people missing, taking the combined number of missing to 3,044.
The disaster has also affected areas downstream in India, where authorities recovered seven bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal. The bodies are believed to be linked to the floods but have not been included in the official death toll.
The floods followed a massive surge of water, mud and debris near the Nepal-China border on Wednesday, devastating settlements and hydropower sites along the river system. Rescue teams continue to search for survivors and people who remain cut off from their families.
