Police have arrested alleged top criminal “Auto Sajal” during a raid in Dhaka‍‍`s Sayedabad area and recovered firearms, ammunition and narcotics following subsequent operations, officials said on Friday.

The arrest was carried out by a team from Jatrabari Police Station on Thursday night as part of an operation targeting criminal activities in the capital, according to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Addressing a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre, Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Nazrul Islam said Sajal was detained around 9:10pm in Sayedabad.

During initial questioning, the suspect reportedly disclosed information about a rented house in the Swamibagh area where weapons and drugs had allegedly been stored.

Based on the information, police conducted another raid and recovered two Taurus-brand pistols, four magazines and 77 rounds of ammunition from the location.

Law enforcers also seized 59 grams of heroin, 87 grams of a substance known locally as “Medi”, cash amounting to Tk 22,960 and four mobile phones allegedly used in criminal activities.

Police suspect that the recovered firearms may be among weapons looted during previous incidents, though investigations are continuing.

According to DMP officials, Sajal‍‍`s name surfaced during the investigation into a shooting at Sayedabad Bus Terminal on March 2, when an inspector of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) was shot during an anti-drug operation.

Three other suspects had previously been arrested in connection with the case.

Police alleged that Sajal had been involved in illegal arms trading and drug trafficking for a long time while working publicly as a transport helper.

Authorities said he is facing at least 11 cases filed at different police stations under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police jurisdiction.

Further investigations are underway.
