BNP has nominated its Secretary General and LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as its presidential candidate.
The decision was announced on Thursday following a meeting of the BNP Standing Committee.
Party sources said Mirza Fakhrul’s nomination papers for the presidential election would be submitted to the Election Commission later on Thursday. With the BNP holding an overwhelming majority in parliament, Mirza Fakhrul is widely expected to become the country’s 23rd president.
If elected president, he would have to relinquish his three positions in the party and government.
Article 70 of the Constitution states that if a person is elected to parliament as a candidate nominated by a political party and subsequently either resigns from that party or votes against it in parliament, their parliamentary seat will become vacant. However, they will not be disqualified from contesting a subsequent parliamentary election on that ground.
The deadline for submitting nomination papers for the country’s 23rd presidential election is 4pm on Thursday, August 13. According to the Election Commission’s schedule, nomination papers can be submitted between 10am and 4pm. The papers will be scrutinised on August 16, while the deadline for withdrawing candidacy is August 18.
Voting is scheduled to take place on August 20, from 2pm to 5pm, in the chamber of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
The BNP has collected two nomination papers for the presidential election, while the 11-party alliance has collected one. Completed nomination papers must be submitted to the office of the election officer at the Election Commission by 4pm on Thursday.
Earlier, on July 24, the country’s 22nd president, Mohammed Shahabuddin, resigned from office. The Election Commission subsequently announced the presidential election schedule, setting August 20 as the polling date.
