Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) today submitted the nomination paper of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to the Election Commission for the presidential election.
The paper was submitted on his behalf on Thursday afternoon.
BNP Standing Committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan proposed Fakhrul’s candidacy, while another Standing Committee member, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, seconded it.
Also present in the delegation during the submission were BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni and Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anny.
Earlier, BNP formally nominated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as its candidate for the country’s 23rd presidential election. Following his nomination, he resigned from all positions he held in the party, including BNP secretary general, as well as from his post as local government minister.
At a high-level BNP meeting held in the Cabinet Division conference room at the Secretariat, party Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman announced Fakhrul as the party’s presidential candidate. Although BNP had purchased two nomination forms for the presidential election, the party ultimately named only one candidate.
According to the election schedule, nomination papers for the presidential election can be submitted from 10am to 4pm on Thursday. The papers will be scrutinised on August 16, while the deadline for withdrawal is August 18. Voting for the presidential election will take place on August 20 in the Jatiya Sangsad chamber. Members of parliament are the electors in the presidential election.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir took charge as BNP’s acting secretary general in 2011 and was formally appointed secretary general at the party’s national council in 2016. After being elected as a member of parliament from the Thakurgaon-1 constituency in the 13th national parliamentary election, he became minister for local government, rural development and cooperatives.
