The BNP wants to elect its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as president as the party’s candidate, backed by its alliance, in the presidential election scheduled for August 20. His nomination papers have been submitted to the Election Commission for the election.
Chief Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad Nurul Islam Moni made the remarks while speaking to reporters after submitting the nomination papers at the election office on Thursday.
He said BNP Standing Committee member Dr Moin Khan proposed Fakhrul’s nomination, while Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy seconded it.
The BNP has nominated him, and our Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has also been nominated by our political alliance. InshaAllah, we want to elect him as president on the 20th, the Chief Whip said.
He said the presidential election would be held at the Jatiya Sangsad building, with the Chief Election Commissioner serving as the returning officer. Members of Parliament will elect the president through voting.
Nurul Islam Moni also said Colonel Oli Ahmed had been nominated for president by an 11-party alliance, and nomination papers had also been submitted on his behalf. As a result, he said, the presidential election on August 20 would be contested.
On implementing the July Charter, the Chief Whip said the prime minister had announced that the charter would be implemented “to the letter.”
We will not rewrite the Constitution. Even changing a single comma in the Constitution would constitute an amendment or reform, he said.
He added that an initiative would be taken to amend the Constitution after considering the views of all stakeholders, with the aim of creating a long-lasting constitutional framework for future generations.
