Bangladesh secured a historic nine-wicket victory over Australia in Darwin on Sunday, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series after a dominant all-round performance.
The visitors needed just 57 runs in their second innings and reached 53 for one in 14.2 overs. Mominul Haque remained unbeaten on 26, while Shadman Islam finished on 25.
The result means Australia can no longer win the series, with one Test still to play.
Bangladesh’s victory also marked a remarkable turnaround from their tour match against a Cricket Australia XI last week, when they were dismissed for just 54.
After Australia were bowled out for 198 in the first innings, Bangladesh responded with 426 to take a commanding 228-run lead. Tanzid Hasan scored his maiden Test century, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz added 65.
Australia showed more resistance in their second innings but could only manage 284. Miraz claimed five wickets, while Hasan Mahmud took three to leave Bangladesh with a modest target.
Hasan Mahmud was also instrumental in the first innings, taking six wickets to finish with nine in the match.
The win came 23 years after Bangladesh’s previous Test in Australia, making the result one of the most significant victories in the country’s Test history.
