US President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind FIFA president Gianni Infantino as the football chief faces growing criticism over allegations of a workplace affair and questions surrounding a private investment scheme.
Trump said FIFA would make a “terrible mistake” by considering replacing Infantino, praising him as a “fantastic” leader and crediting him with overseeing what he called the most successful World Cup ever.
“If he is gone, it will never be as successful or profitable again!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
Trump’s comments came as Infantino faces pressure ahead of his expected bid for another term as FIFA president next March. Infantino has denied any wrongdoing.
FIFA has also defended its president, describing the criticism against him as part of what it called a continued effort by some groups to undermine the organisation.
However, Trump’s position is not shared by all football bodies in the region.
US Soccer, together with Canada Soccer and football organisations from Central America and the Caribbean, issued a statement criticising Infantino.
Infantino has also received support from several major football organisations.
The Confederation of African Football and South American governing body CONMEBOL are among those backing the FIFA president.
The dispute comes as Infantino prepares for the election and faces renewed scrutiny over his leadership and conduct.
