Bangladesh enjoyed a dream start to their first Test in Australia in 23 years, with Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain dismantling the hosts’ batting lineup in Darwin. Under relentless pressure from Bangladesh’s pace attack, Australia were bowled out for 198 in just 53 overs.
The day’s standout performer was Hasan Mahmud. In his first Test in Australia, the right-arm pacer produced the best bowling figures of his career, taking six wickets for 55 runs in 19 overs. His outstanding spell helped restrict Australia to under 200 in their first innings.
Hasan’s figures are now the best by a Bangladesh bowler in a Test against Australia. The previous best was held by Mohammad Rafique, who took five wickets for 62 runs against Australia in Fatullah in 2006. In 2017, Shakib Al Hasan took five wickets twice against Australia in Mirpur, conceding 68 and 85 runs respectively. Hasan has now surpassed them all.
Hasan has also become the first Bangladesh bowler to take a five-wicket haul in any format on Australian soil. No Bangladesh bowler had previously achieved the feat in Australia.
This is Hasan’s third five-wicket haul overseas in Tests. He previously claimed five wickets in India and Pakistan, and has now added Australia to that list with another memorable performance.
Hasan has also moved to the top of Bangladesh’s list of bowlers with five-wicket hauls against Australia in Tests. His six-wicket haul is followed by Mohammad Rafique’s five-wicket haul and Shakib Al Hasan’s two five-wicket spells.
Hasan has also shown remarkable consistency among Bangladesh’s pace bowlers overseas. He has taken three five-wicket hauls in just 15 Test matches. The only Bangladesh pacer ahead of him is Shahadat Hossain, who took four five-wicket hauls in 38 Tests. Rubel Hossain and Nahid Rana have taken two five-wicket hauls each.
Hasan was not the only Bangladesh pacer to make an impact in Darwin. Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain also picked up wickets and kept the pressure on Australia. Eventually, the hosts were bowled out for 198 in their first innings against Bangladesh’s formidable pace attack.
