Prices of chicken, eggs and milk — the main sources of protein for middle- and low-income people — have increased again. The price of broiler chicken has risen by Tk 10 to Tk 20 per kilogram within a week. The price of Sonali chicken also remains high. At the same time, a dozen eggs are being sold for Tk 145 to Tk 150, while the price of milk has reached Tk 110 per litre. The rising prices have made it increasingly difficult for low-income people to meet their daily protein needs.
Meanwhile, vegetable prices in the capital’s kitchen markets had reached unusually high levels in recent weeks due to continuous rain. However, improved supply has brought some relief, with most vegetables now selling between Tk 60 and Tk 80 per kilogram, though prices of some items remain close to Tk 100.
The situation was observed during visits to several kitchen markets in the capital on Friday.
Market visits showed that broiler chicken is being sold at Tk 190 to Tk 200 per kilogram, up from Tk 170 to Tk 180 a week ago. Sonali chicken is selling at Tk 320 to Tk 340 per kilogram. Farm eggs are priced at Tk 145 to Tk 150 per dozen, while milk is being sold at Tk 110 per litre. In many shops, particularly Milkvita milk, the price was found to be Tk 110. Meanwhile, prices of local chicken and local eggs remain beyond the reach of ordinary consumers.
Meanwhile, the price of green chillies has started declining in the capital’s markets due to imports from India. A week ago, green chillies were selling at Tk 400 per kilogram in retail markets, but prices have now dropped to Tk 250 to Tk 280 in many markets. At the wholesale level, green chillies are being sold at Tk 180 to Tk 200 per kilogram.
Currently, vegetables are being sold at the following prices: yardlong beans at Tk 80 per kilogram, ridge gourd at Tk 100, snake gourd at Tk 80, sponge gourd at Tk 60, cucumber at Tk 60, pointed gourd at Tk 60, okra at Tk 60, papaya at Tk 40 and tomatoes at Tk 160.
Besides, bottle gourd is selling at Tk 60 to Tk 80 per piece, radish at Tk 80 per kilogram, jali at Tk 60, round eggplant at Tk 100, carrot at Tk 100, taro at Tk 80, bitter gourd at Tk 100, pumpkin at Tk 60 and raw bananas at Tk 40 per four pieces.
Market insiders said rising poultry feed prices, increased production costs and higher transportation expenses have contributed to market instability. They also blamed inadequate market monitoring for failing to bring prices of essential protein products under control. Consumers said low- and middle-income families are suffering the most due to the rising costs.
