US President Donald Trump has renewed his effort to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, giving her 21 days to respond to allegations that she made false statements on mortgage applications.
A White House letter dated August 5 and signed by Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino says Trump is considering removing Cook from her position.
The allegations remain unproven, and Cook has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
The move comes after the US Supreme Court in June blocked Trump`s earlier attempt to dismiss Cook without first giving her an opportunity to respond to the allegations.
“You are hereby provided notice that the President is considering removing you from your position,” the White House letter said.
Cook must respond to the allegations by August 26, according to the letter.
Trump`s latest action is part of his broader campaign against the Federal Reserve`s independence since returning to the White House.
He has also openly pressured the central bank over interest rates and launched a criminal investigation involving former Fed Chair Jerome Powell.
Trump`s initial attempt to fire Cook was unprecedented in the 111-year history of the Federal Reserve.
The central bank operates independently from the White House and is responsible for setting monetary policy in the world`s largest economy.
In its June ruling, the Supreme Court said Trump could not remove Fed governors without following the legal protections provided to them.
The court specifically noted that it was deciding the case on procedural grounds and did not rule on whether the mortgage allegations against Cook were true.
Trump responded angrily to the ruling at the time and said he would take “appropriate action immediately” against Cook.
The new White House letter repeats allegations that Cook provided inaccurate information on mortgage applications and argues that the alleged conduct shows she is unfit to remain in office.
Cook, who became the first Black woman to serve as a Federal Reserve governor, has strongly rejected the accusations.
She has said the effort to remove her is politically motivated and linked to her refusal to allow political pressure to influence her decisions on interest rates.
“This was never about mortgage documents signed years before I became a Federal Reserve governor,” Cook said after the Supreme Court ruling, according to US media.
Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren criticised Trump`s latest move, accusing him of again trying to undermine the independence of the Federal Reserve.
Warren said Democrats would oppose the effort to remove Cook and work to prevent Trump from gaining political control over the central bank.
