The Indian government has clarified its position regarding a virtual press conference by ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from Delhi, saying it has no involvement in the event.
Speaking at a regular briefing on Tuesday, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the Indian government has no connection with the programme and does not endorse any statements made by the organisers.
“The interaction you refer to is being organized by a private media entity. The government has no involvement whatsoever in it. Neither does it endorse any views that may be expressed at the forum”, Jaiswal said.
Earlier on Monday, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain raised Dhaka’s concerns over Sheikh Hasina’s possible remarks while meeting Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma. He also sought India’s cooperation on the issue.
During the meeting, Hossain requested that individuals associated with banned organisations, including Sheikh Hasina, who are currently staying in India, should not be allowed to use Indian territory to make political statements or engage in activities aimed at creating instability inside Bangladesh.
He said such activities could undermine the positive progress in bilateral relations between the two countries.
In response, the Indian high commissioner assured that the matter would be looked into appropriately and that necessary steps would be taken after reviewing the situation.
