The Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary seat has become vacant following Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s assumption of office as Bangladesh’s 23rd President.
The Parliament Secretariat announced the vacancy in a press release on Saturday, saying the seat ceased to exist from 7:30pm on August 21, when Mirza Fakhrul took charge as President.
The vacancy came in line with Article 50(4) of the Constitution.
Mirza Fakhrul took the presidential oath at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban on Friday evening after being elected President in the August 20 election.
He contested the election as the BNP candidate against his only rival, Col (retd) Oli Ahmad, who represented the 11-party opposition alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
A total of 343 valid votes were cast in the presidential election. Mirza Fakhrul received 255 votes, while Oli Ahmad secured 88.
Six lawmakers did not vote despite 349 lawmakers being eligible to participate in the election.
Mirza Fakhrul had won the Thakurgaon-1 constituency in the February 12 parliamentary election before taking over as President.
