Several parts of Khagrachhari have been flooded after heavy overnight rain sent river waters rising rapidly, leaving many families stranded and forcing residents in low-lying areas to move to safer places.
The Chengi and Maini rivers rose sharply after hours of rain from Friday night to Saturday morning, flooding low-lying areas in Sadar and Dighinala upazilas.
The Dighinala weather observation centre recorded 103 millimetres of rain in 24 hours.
In Sadar, rising water from the Chengi River inundated Muslimpara, Bottoli, Kaladeba, Ganjpara, Footbil and Khobongporya. Many residents left their homes as the water rose quickly and took shelter on roads or other higher ground.
Floodwater also damaged homes and affected livestock and poultry.
In Dighinala, the rising Maini River flooded Nilmonchal, Merung and nearby areas. Water also covered sections of several roads, including both sides of the Dighinala Chowmuhani Steel Bridge. Vehicles, however, were still able to move through the affected areas.
Traffic was briefly disrupted on the Khagrachhari-Dighinala road after a landslide at the 8-mile area.
Fire Service personnel and local residents cleared the soil, and road communication was restored around 9am.
Residents said the sudden flooding was unlike anything they had seen in the area in several years.
Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner Anowar Sadat said the administration was preparing to provide dry food and shelter to people affected by the flooding.
He said authorities were closely monitoring the situation and would provide further assistance based on the needs of affected communities.
