Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the BNP-nominated candidate, has been elected the country’s 23rd president. The Election Commission published a gazette on Thursday declaring him the winner.

He will take oath as the new president at Bangabhaban at 7:30pm today (Friday).

Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin declared Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir the winner at around 5:15pm on Thursday, after voting in the presidential election concluded. He secured 255 votes, while his rival Oli Ahmed, the candidate backed by an 11-party alliance, received 88 votes.

Earlier on Thursday afternoon, CEC A.M.M. Nasir Uddin briefed lawmakers at the Jatiya Sangsad on the voting procedures for the presidential election. Voting then began and continued until 5pm.

After nearly three and a half decades, members of parliament once again had the opportunity to vote in a presidential election. A total of 349 MPs in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad were eligible to vote, but 343 ballots were cast, with six MPs absent.

Acting Speaker Kaysar Kamal will administer the oath of office to President-elect Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at Bangabhaban at 7:30pm today.

This is the first presidential election since 1991 to feature more than one candidate. As a result, voting was held in accordance with the legal requirement.

The election is being viewed as significant as it marks the restoration of MPs’ right to vote in a presidential election after 35 years. Officials and political observers say the election could contribute to greater dynamism in the country’s parliamentary democracy.
