President-elect Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir paid his respects at the graves of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on Friday.
He visited the graves after Friday prayers, just hours before taking oath as president.
Mirza Fakhrul laid floral wreaths at the graves and offered prayers seeking the eternal peace of the departed leaders.
Mirza Fakhrul won Thursday’s presidential election held in the Jatiya Sangsad with 255 votes. His rival, Oli Ahmed, received 88 votes.
Mirza Fakhrul entered politics after leaving his teaching career. In 1988, he was elected chairman of a municipality and went on to be elected to parliament for the first time in 1991.
He later served as a minister and state minister in various ministries. Since 2011, Mirza Fakhrul had served as the BNP’s second-highest-ranking leader. In 2016, he was appointed the party’s full secretary general after serving as acting secretary general.
