Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has moved into Bangabhaban, the official residence of the president, after leaving his government residence in the ministers’ residential area on Minto Road in the capital.
He entered Bangabhaban at around 11:00am on Sunday.
As the presidential motorcade arrived at the Bangabhaban premises, a ceremonial mounted cavalry unit welcomed the president and escorted him inside. Later, a smartly turned-out contingent of the armed forces presented him with a guard of honour on Bangabhaban Lane.
After the formalities, the president entered the official residence. He will now reside at Bangabhaban and conduct his official and state affairs from there.
Under state protocol, the president is required to move into Bangabhaban after assuming office as the country’s highest constitutional authority.
Earlier on Friday evening, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sworn in as the country’s 23rd president at the historic Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban.
He was elected president on August 20, securing 255 votes in the presidential election held in parliament. His election marked the return of a parliamentary presidential election after a gap of 35 years.
Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed, chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and candidate backed by the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance, received 88 votes in the election.
