Police have obstructed the “March to Jamuna” program organized by ready-made garment (RMG) workers demanding arrears and other dues.
Facing the blockade, the workers staged a sit-in protest at the Kakrail Mosque intersection.
On Tuesday, May 20, shortly after 2:30 PM, workers from three garment factories began marching from in front of the Labour Building in Bijoynagar, Dhaka, towards the Chief Adviser’s residence at Jamuna.
At around 3:00 PM, as the procession reached Kakrail Mosque intersection, police set up barricades to block their movement.
In response, the workers sat down at the spot and continued their protest there.
As a result, traffic has been halted on the road from Kakrail Mosque towards Hotel Intercontinental, and partially disrupted on the road from Matsya Bhaban towards Kakrail.
Despite rain starting at around 3:15 PM, the workers did not leave. Protesters were seen continuing their demonstration while getting soaked in the rain.
The protesting workers included employees from Chain Apparels Ltd in Ashulia, eight factories under the TNZ Group in Gazipur, and five factories under the Dard Group.
They were heard chanting various slogans demanding their unpaid wages and dues.
