Four highways and eight bridges which were named after the Sheikh family, have been renamed

The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges has made a significant decision to change the names of four highways and eight bridges across the country.

This change has been confirmed by a notification signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Mohammad Golam Zilani, issued on Monday.

The following changes have been announced:

  • The name of the highway stretching from the Jatrabari intersection to Mawa (35 kilometers) and from Pachar to Bhanga (20 kilometers) has been changed from "Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Expressway" to "Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga Expressway."
  • Another highway in Sylhet, connecting Airport Bypass Intersection to Lalbagh, Salutikar, Kompaniganj, and Bholaganj, has had its name altered from "Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Highway" to "Sylhet District Airport Bypass Intersection-Lalbagh-Salutikar-Kompaniganj-Bholaganj National Highway."
  • A road under the Madaripur Road Division, running over 222.75 kilometers from Madaripur (Mostafapur) to Shariatpur via Kazirtek Bridge, has been renamed from "Sheikh Hasina Highway" to "Kazirtek Bridge-Shariatpur Highway."
  • In Chittagong, the road connecting Bortakia (Abutorab) to the Mirsharai Economic Zone, previously called "Sheikh Hasina Sarani," has been renamed "Bortakia (Abutorab)-Mirsharai Economic Zone Link Road."

In terms of bridges, several others have also undergone name changes:

  • The 278.88-meter PC Guard Bridge built over the Karatoa River at Kanchdahghat in Pirganj Upazila has been renamed from "Wazed Mia Bridge" to "Kanchdah Bridge."
  • The "Sheikh Kamal Bridge" over the Andarmanik River, located at the 49th kilometer of the Patuakhali-Kuakata Regional Highway, has now been renamed to "Andarmanik Bridge."
  • Similarly, the "Sheikh Jamal Bridge" over the Sonatala River at the 61st kilometer of the same highway has been renamed "Sonatala Bridge."
  • The bridge over the Khapravanga River at the 66th kilometer of the Patuakhali-Kuakata Regional Highway has been renamed from "Sheikh Rasel Bridge" to "Khapravanga Bridge."
  • A bridge over the Baleswar River in Pirojpur District, known as "Shaheed Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani Bridge," has been renamed "Indurkani Bridge."
  • The "Bongamata Begum Fazilatunnessa Mujib 8th Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge" over the Kancha River in Pirojpur’s Bekutia area has been renamed to "Bekutia Bridge."
  • In Narayanganj, the second Shitalakshya Bridge, previously called "Sultana Kamal Bridge," is now officially known as "Demra Bridge."
  • Finally, the Dapdapia Bridge in Barisal District has had its name shortened from "Shaheed Abdur Rab Serniabat Bridge" to simply "Dapdapia Bridge."

These changes are part of a public interest order and are effective immediately.
