The Election Commission (EC) today commenced the second day of hearings on appeals lodged against the decisions of returning officers regarding the acceptance and rejection of nomination papers for the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election.
The hearings began at 10am at the auditorium of the Election Building in the capital`s Agargaon.
Director (Public Relations) of the EC Secretariat Md Ruhul Amin Mollik told BSS that, according to the schedule announced by the Commission, appeals bearing serial numbers 71 to 140 are being heard today.
The full commission, headed by Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin, will continue the hearings until 5pm, he added.
On the first day of hearings, held Saturday, the Commission disposed of 70 appeals, allowing 52.
Senior Secretary of the EC Secretariat Akhtar Ahmed informed journalists that of those 70 appeals, 52 were allowed and 15 rejected, while hearings on three were adjourned due to factual inconsistencies.
Among the 52 allowed appeals, 51 candidates regained their candidacy.
Additionally, the candidacy of one individual, previously declared valid by a returning officer, was cancelled following the appeal hearing.
The hearings will continue until January 18. As per the schedule, appeals numbered 141 to 210 will be heard tomorrow, Monday, while appeals numbered 211 to 280 will be taken up on Tuesday.
EC officials said that after the hearings conclude, the results will be displayed on monitors, PDF copies of verdicts and decisions will be sent to the email accounts of returning officers and other concerned parties, and the decisions will also be published on the Commission`s website.
They added that copies of verdicts delivered between January 10 and 12 can be collected from the reception desk of the Election Building on January 12.
A total of 645 appeals have been filed with the Election Commission.
