5.2 magnitude earthquake jolts Sylhet, several parts of the country

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake was felt in Sylhet and several other parts of the country early Monday morning. The tremor struck at around 4:47am and lasted for several seconds, causing panic in some areas as residents rushed out of their homes.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre of the earthquake was in the Dhing area of India’s Assam state. The quake originated at a depth of about 35 kilometres below the surface.

No immediate reports of casualties or damage were received following the tremor.

Sylhet had experienced similar seismic activity last month. On 10 December last year, two earthquakes were recorded within a span of five minutes during the early hours. The first occurred at 2:20:31am, followed by another at 2:25:14am.
