A fire broke out at a substation of the Ghorashal Thermal Power Plant in Narsingdi early Thursday, leaving residents of two upazilas without electricity for nearly six hours.

Enamul Haque, Chief Engineer of the Ghorashal power station, said the incident occurred around 4:00 am. “A 132/33 kV transformer of the national grid at the substation suddenly caught fire in the early hours, causing panic across the power plant,” he explained.

A unit from the Palash Fire Service arrived on the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control after about an hour of effort.

The fire destroyed the transformer, cutting electricity supply to the residents of Palash and Kaliganj upazilas. Power was restored to the two upazilas through alternative lines after nearly six hours.

Chief Engineer Enamul Haque added that a short circuit is believed to have caused the fire, though the full extent of the damage has not yet been assessed.
