NCP Joins with Jamaat

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has entered into a seat-sharing arrangement with Jamaat-e-Islami ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election.

NCP Convener Nahid Islam announced the decision at a press conference held after 8pm on Sunday at the party’s temporary central office in Bangla Motor, Dhaka.

“For the implementation of reforms and in the interest of broader unity, we have reached an electoral understanding with Jamaat-e-Islami,” Nahid said.

Referring to the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, Nahid said the incident demonstrated that “hegemonic forces” remain active in Bangladesh and are attempting to derail the election.

“The dictatorship that was overthrown on August 5 is trying to sabotage the electoral process. In this context, we felt the need for greater unity,” he said.

Nahid said the NCP had initially planned to contest the election independently and had already distributed nomination forms. The party later formed a three-party alliance, but the killing of Hadi prompted a reassessment of its strategy.

“We realised there is a plan to obstruct the progress of the new Bangladesh and suppress the July generation. To ensure a competitive election, we held discussions with Jamaat-e-Islami and like-minded parties and decided to contest the polls together,” he added.

Earlier in the evening, Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman announced at a separate press conference that the NCP and the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) were joining the Jamaat-led eight-party electoral alliance.
