A Dhaka court has granted a four-day remand for former Member of Parliament Momtaz Begum, who was arrested in connection with a murder case filed at Mirpur Model Police Station, linked to the anti-discrimination student movement.

On Tuesday (May 13), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jewel Rana passed the remand order after police sought a seven-day remand for interrogation.

Momtaz was produced before the court earlier in the day by Sub-Inspector Monirul Islam, the investigation officer of the case. Defense lawyers appealed for the remand to be canceled and sought bail instead. After the hearing, the court granted a four-day remand.

According to Deputy Police Commissioner (DMP) Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Momtaz Begum is an accused in the murder case and had been sent to court to seek remand for questioning.

She was arrested late Monday night (May 12) from Dhanmondi in the capital.

Background sources state that on July 19, a protester named Md Sagar took part in the anti-discrimination student movement at the Mirpur-10 roundabout. Around 4:30 PM, alleged attackers opened fire on demonstrators.

Sagar was shot in the chest, and the bullet exited through his back. His mother, Beauty Akter, began searching for him and eventually found his body at a private hospital in Mirpur at around 3 AM that night. His body was later taken to their village and buried.

On November 27 last year, Sagar’s mother filed a case at Mirpur Model Police Station, naming Sheikh Hasina and 243 others as accused, along with 250 to 400 unidentified individuals. Momtaz Begum is listed as the 49th accused in the case.
