UN Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Major General Mohammad Asadullah Minhazul Alam as Force Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
He succeeds Major General Erdenebat Batsuuri, whose service was acknowledged by the United Nations.
According to the UN, Major General Alam brings more than three decades of experience in leadership and command roles within the Bangladesh Army.
He most recently served at the Army Training and Doctrine Command and previously held key positions, including General Officer Commanding of the 10 Infantry Division and Area Commander in Cox’s Bazar, as well as Commandant of the Defence Services Command and Staff College.
Throughout his career, he has worked in areas such as counterterrorism, internal security, disaster response and intelligence-based operations.
He also has experience in UN peacekeeping missions, having served in the Central African Republic under MINUSCA and earlier as a military observer in East Timor under UNTAET.
Major General Alam holds advanced degrees in international relations, national security strategy, defence studies and business administration.
Officials said his appointment reflects Bangladesh’s continued contribution to UN peacekeeping missions worldwide.
