The Jatiya Sangsad has passed a new law fixing the maximum age limit for direct recruitment to government jobs at 32 years.
The bill was placed in parliament by State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari and approved by voice vote, marking the first law passed by the 13th parliament.
Under the new law, the age limit will apply to government, autonomous and statutory bodies, as well as public corporations and self-governing organisations.
Officials said the move aims to bring consistency, as different recruitment rules previously allowed higher age limits in some cases, creating confusion in the hiring process.
The law replaces earlier ordinances and amendments, setting a uniform age cap across all sectors for direct appointments.
According to the bill, increasing the age limit is expected to create more opportunities for job seekers, especially educated unemployed youth, and help address unemployment challenges.
Authorities also believe the decision could have a positive impact on the labour market and the overall economy.
The government said turning the ordinance into law was necessary, particularly as recruitment processes such as those conducted by the Bangladesh Public Service Commission are already being carried out based on the 32-year age limit.
The new law is expected to standardise recruitment policies and reduce complications in public sector hiring.
