Rain likely to continue across country over next 5 days

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast rain across the country for the next five days, with light to moderate showers and isolated heavy rainfall expected in all eight divisions due to an active monsoon and a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.

The forecast was issued by the BMD on Wednesday as part of its 120-hour outlook.

The department said the low-pressure area that was previously located over Jharkhand and adjoining areas has moved northwest and is now positioned over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas. The monsoon trough extends from Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh through the centre of the low-pressure area, Gangetic West Bengal and the southern part of the country to Assam. The monsoon is fairly active over the country and moderate over the northern Bay of Bengal.

According to the forecast, many areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, as well as some areas of Rajshahi, Dhaka and Khulna divisions, may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds on Wednesday. Moderate to heavy rainfall is also possible in some areas. Day and night temperatures may fall slightly.

On Thursday and Friday, many areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and some areas of Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions may see rain or thundershowers. Moderate to heavy rainfall is possible in some areas. Temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged on Thursday. On Friday, daytime temperatures may fall slightly, while nighttime temperatures are likely to remain unchanged.

Rainfall may become more widespread on August 29 and 30, with many areas across all eight divisions likely to experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds. Moderate to heavy rainfall is possible in some areas. Both daytime and nighttime temperatures may fall slightly on August 29, while temperatures may remain largely unchanged the following day.

Overall, the rainy trend is expected to continue throughout the five-day extended forecast period.

Meanwhile, winds were blowing over the capital from the south or southeast at 8–12 km/h. Relative humidity in the capital was recorded at 87% at 6 a.m. Wednesday.
