At least 15 newborn babies have died after a fire broke out in a nursery at a government hospital in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad, reportedly following an explosion in an air conditioner compressor.
The fire broke out Wednesday morning at the nursery of the gynecology department at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), where 16 babies were being treated at the time. Only one was rescued alive.
According to Geo News, the district administration told that 14 children were completely burnt in the fire that broke out on the third floor of the MCH ward.
Rescue workers said the nursery was located on the hospital’s third floor. Firefighters broke the windows to enter the room, brought the blaze under control, and were carrying out cooling operations.
A probe committee has been formed under the leadership of an additional deputy commissioner to investigate the cause of the fire.
PIMS Hospital was also where former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan underwent medical examinations following a court order.
