Muslims across Bangladesh are observing Eid-e-Miladunnabi today with prayers, religious discussions nd various programmes highlighting the life and teachings of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH).
The day, which marks the birth and death anniversary of the Prophet (PBUH), is being observed as a public holiday across the country. According to Islamic tradition, he was born in Makkah on 12 Rabiul Awal in 570 AD and passed away on the same date in 632 AD.
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman have issued separate messages extending greetings to Muslims in Bangladesh and around the world on the occasion.
As part of the national programmes, the President inaugurated the Islamic Foundation’s fortnight-long ‘Siratunnabi (PBUH) Programme’ at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Mosques across the country are holding special prayers and religious programmes.
Similar observances are also being held at Bangladesh missions abroad.
The Islamic Foundation’s programme will continue from August 25 to September 8. It includes religious sermons, seminars, discussions, qirat, hamd-naat, poetry recitation and Arabic essay-writing competitions.
An Islamic cultural competition has also been arranged for students from schools, colleges, universities and madrasahs.
The foundation is additionally holding a calligraphy exhibition and a month-long Islamic book fair at the east and south courtyards of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
Renowned Islamic scholars will deliver sermons every day from after Maghrib prayers until 10pm during the fortnight programme.
The programmes are focused on the Prophet’s (PBUH) teachings on morality, humanity, tolerance and peace, and their relevance to personal, family and social life.
The Islamic Foundation and Bangladesh Betar are jointly organising a seminar, while Bangladesh Betar will broadcast a special poetry programme.
Divisional, district and upazila administrations, city corporations, municipalities and the armed forces are also holding discussions and doa mahfils.
Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and other electronic media have been requested to air special programmes, while newspapers are publishing special supplements marking the occasion.
Special programmes have also been arranged for children by the Bangladesh Shishu Academy, including hamd-naat, discussions and essay competitions.
Major city points, road islands and light posts have been decorated with national and colourful flags and banners carrying the Kalima Tayyiba.
Authorities have also arranged improved meals for people at military and civil hospitals, prisons, government orphanages, child development centres and old-age homes as part of the observance.
