The body of Albert Jong, a New Zealand teenager who went missing after a boat carrying foreign tourists capsized at Nazirartek Point in Cox’s Bazar, was recovered a day later.
Locals spotted a body floating near the Samitipara coast on Wednesday afternoon and alerted police. Police later recovered the body and sent it to the morgue at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.
Three other members of the family—Edward, his wife Bella, and 13-year-old Ralph—are currently in Coast Guard custody. Local fishermen rescued them on Tuesday and took them to hospital for treatment.
Fire Service and Coast Guard teams continued search operations at sea on Tuesday night to locate Albert. A Bangladesh Navy vessel, Shapla, and a speedboat later joined the rescue effort.
The boat carrying the family sank on Tuesday morning after being hit by heavy waves in the Nazirartek-Sonadia estuary. All four family members fell into the water. Three were rescued, but Albert Jong remained missing. His body was found floating near the Samitipara coast on Wednesday afternoon.
The tourist family had come to Cox’s Bazar from New Zealand and had been staying there for an extended period. An officer of the Cox’s Bazar District Police’s Detective Branch said the family had recently been preparing to return home after their visas expired. The accident occurred during this period.
However, Cox’s Bazar District Police could not provide specific information about how long the family had been staying in the area. They were reportedly living on a boat near the coast.
