In an interesting move, the ruling Awami League has revoked the expulsion order of sacked Gazipur mayor Mohammad Jahangir Alam. He was also the general secretary of the party's Gazipur city unit.
Jahangir Alam was suspended from the post of Gazipur City Corporation mayor on November 25, 2021 on allegations of various irregularities.
Before that, the Awami League expelled Jahangir Alam for his derogatory remarks on Bangabandhu and martyred freedom fighters, an allegation that he terms a conspiracy against him.
In September 2021, videos of him making some derogatory comments on Bangabandhu and some martyred freedom fighters at a program went viral on social media.
However, Jahangir Alam in December told reporters that he will get reinstated as he secured the general mercy given by Awami League in its national committee meeting on December 17.
“I was of Awami League, I am of Awami League and I will remain so,” he said then.
On December 17, the AL national committee unanimously granted general mercy for over 100 leaders and activists of the party.
