An autorickshaw driver who was wounded by gunfire in Gopalganj has died, bringing the death toll from the violence surrounding the National Citizen Party (NCP) rally to five.
Ramzan Munshi succumbed to his injuries on Thursday while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, reports bdnews24.com.
He was shot around 2:30pm on Wednesday while driving his autorickshaw, according to his brother Imran Munshi. Bullets struck him above his right wrist and under his right arm.
Ramzan was admitted to DMCH later that night and passed away a day later. Two other gunshot victims from the Gopalganj violence, Sumon Biswas, 30, and Abbas Ali, 30, are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Tensions had been simmering since Tuesday over the NCP`s planned rally and march in Gopalganj. On Wednesday, clashes erupted between Awami League supporters and security forces following a series of attacks on the NCP rally. The violence eventually spread across the city.
Four people were initially reported killed in the clashes, with at least nine others shot and more than 50 injured. No cases had been filed over the violence as of Thursday night.
Dipto Saha, 30, Ramzan Kazi, 17, Sohel Rana, 35, and Imon, identified by his first name, are among the dead.
To contain the unrest, a curfew was imposed on Wednesday and extended through Friday. Joint forces have detained 24 people in connection with the violence.
While the curfew has calmed the tense town, fear of arrest persists among residents. Many Awami League and Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders, activists, and supporters have reportedly left the area.
