Police have recovered the body of a retired schoolteacher, Md Nasir Uddin Ahmed (68), from the stage of the Shaheed Mostafa playground in Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur.
The body was found around 4:00 PM on Sunday (July 13) after locals spotted it and alerted authorities.
Nasir Uddin was a former assistant teacher in the sociology department at KM Latif Institution in Mathbaria. He had taken voluntary retirement on May 31, 2014, due to health reasons.
Originally from Durgapur village in the Gulishakhali Union, he was the son of the late Abul Hashem Hawladar.
His younger brother, Md Gias Uddin, is a former Director General of the Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB).
According to family members, Nasir Uddin left his residence in the Bank Colony area of the town on Saturday morning, intending to travel to his village home.
When he failed to return and could not be contacted, his son, Md Riaz Uddin, filed a General Diary (GD) with Mathbaria Police Station. The family also announced his disappearance through loudspeaker announcements in the area.
The next day, residents found his lifeless body on the stage of the playground and notified the police. Law enforcement recovered the body and sent it to the Pirojpur District Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Eyewitnesses reported that the deceased had visible head injuries and was bleeding. Some locals expressed suspicion over the circumstances, saying the incident did not appear to be a natural death.
The family also suspects something mysterious. “My father left for the village and never returned. The next day, his bloodied body was found in the open. We are devastated,” his son Riaz Uddin told media, demanding a proper investigation to uncover the real cause of death.
Mathbaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the recovery. “We received information from locals and recovered the body. It has been sent for post-mortem examination. Without investigation, we cannot determine the actual cause of death,” he said.
A case of unnatural death has been filed as a preliminary measure.
