Govt officer dismissed over Facebook post criticising Chief Adviser

The government has officially dismissed Tapasi Tabassum Urmi, a former assistant commissioner at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Lalmonirhat, for posting a controversial statement on Facebook about the interim government’s Chief Adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification on Wednesday confirming her termination from public service.

Urmi had posted a strongly worded Facebook status criticizing the Chief Adviser’s comments about a political “reset,” alleging that it was an attempt to erase the nation’s historical context.

Her post also included sarcastic remarks, referencing the slogan “You are who? I am who? Rajakar–Rajakar,” implying betrayal and labeling those in power.

She had also made posts about Abu Sayeed, a man killed in a police shooting in Rangpur, further drawing attention to her online activity.

Following the initial controversy in October last year, Urmi was first made an Officer on Special Duty (OSD), then placed under temporary suspension the following day.

A departmental case was filed against her under the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules for misconduct.

As part of the proceedings, she was served a show-cause notice. In her written response, Urmi declined to appear in person citing security concerns. Her explanation was deemed unsatisfactory, prompting the appointment of an inquiry officer.

After the investigation confirmed the allegations, a second show-cause notice was issued, asking why she should not be given the maximum penalty of dismissal from service.

Upon reviewing the inquiry findings, her response, and relevant documents, the authorities concluded that the charge of misconduct had been proven.

The Public Service Commission concurred with the recommendation, and the President of Bangladesh approved the decision to terminate her service.

Urmi is also facing a pending legal case in court related to the same issue.
