Ten people, including women and children, were burned in a gas leak explosion at a house in the Kamarpara area of Dhaka. They have been admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
The incident occurred early Friday on the second floor of a building in Sector 10 of Kamarpara. The injured include Rubel, 30; his pregnant wife Sonia Akter, 25; their daughter Roza, 3; Sonia’s elder sister Riya, 27; Rubel’s cousin Enayet, 32; his wife Delera, 28; their son Junayed, 10; Enayet’s younger brother Habib, 30; Enayet’s niece Ayesha, 19; and Abul Kalam Rubel, 35.
According to Enayet’s nephew Sazed Matabbar, Rubel and Sonia lived in the flat where the explosion occurred. Rubel works as a motorcycle ride-share driver, while Enayet is a Dubai expatriate who recently returned to Bangladesh.
Sazed said the explosion happened early in the morning. Residents heard a loud blast and found parts of the ground- and second-floor walls had collapsed. All 10 people inside suffered burn injuries.
Sub-Inspector Nure Alam Siddique of Turag police station said the blast may have been caused by a gas leak that accumulated overnight. When someone tried to light a fire in the morning, the explosion occurred. No comment from the fire service was immediately available.
Residential surgeon Shawon Bin Rahman provided the burn severity: Sonia suffered 100% burns, Rubel 32%, Roza 18%, Habib 19%, Riya 32%, Enayet 45%, Delera 14%, Junayed 24%, Ayesha 12%, and Abul Kalam Rubel 7%.
