May Day is being observed in Bangladesh today, along with many countries around the world, to honour workers and their long struggle for fair rights and better working conditions.
The day, also known as International Workers’ Solidarity Day, remembers the labour movement in Chicago in the late 19th century that demanded an eight-hour workday.
It is a public holiday in Bangladesh.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued messages marking the occasion.
In his message, the president said the government has taken steps to improve workers’ welfare, including reforms in labour laws, fair wages, social security and job protection.
The prime minister said workers are the driving force of the country’s development and progress. He stressed the importance of ensuring their safety, dignity and rights.
He added that building a strong and prosperous nation depends on protecting workers and creating a safe working environment.
The day is being marked with rallies, discussions and various programmes across the country.
