Unidentified assailants have entered a house and hacked to death an SSC examinee in the Dhamrai Municipality area of Dhaka, police said.

The incident occurred in Lakuriapara Mohalla on Thursday evening, according to Dhamrai Police Station chief Nazmul Huda.

The victim, Nahida Akhter, 16, was a commerce student appearing for the SSC examination from Dhamrai Central School.

Her mother Liza Akhter is an expatriate, and her father Nur Hossain lives in Barisal. Nahida used to live with her grandmother in Dhamrai.

Citing local residents, police said Nahida’s grandmother had gone out to buy milk. Upon returning, she found Nahida lying on the floor in a pool of blood. The attackers had entered the house and assaulted her with sharp weapons. They also took away the gold jewellery she was wearing.

Nahida was rushed to Noyar Hat Gonoshathya Samajbhittik Hospital, where a doctor declared her dead.

Officer Nazmul said police visited the scene around 8pm after being informed.

The motive of the murder, however, has yet to be confirmed.

He added that the body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital for a postmortem examination.
