Bangladesh women’s hockey team has created history by securing their first-ever international victory. On Friday, during the Women’s Asian Games Qualifiers held at the GBK Hockey Field in Jakarta, the red-and-green side defeated strong opponents Uzbekistan 3–2.

From the very beginning, Bangladesh played an attacking game. Rimon Sharika gave Bangladesh an early lead with a goal, but Uzbekistan’s Madinabonu Khujayeva quickly equalized from a penalty corner.

In the 24th minute of the second quarter, Akhtar Kona scored a field goal to put Bangladesh ahead 2–1 once again. In the third quarter, player of the match Irene Ria extended the lead to 3–1 with a goal from a penalty corner. Uzbekistan reduced the margin in the final quarter by converting a penalty stroke, but Bangladesh held on firmly to seal a 3–2 victory.

With this result, Bangladesh now top Group A with 4 points from two matches, having one win and one draw. Uzbekistan are second with 3 points. Bangladesh will play their third group match against Hong Kong on Sunday.

In this eight-team tournament, the top four teams will qualify for the Asian Games scheduled to be held in Japan in September–October this year.
