Buddha Purnima being observed today

Buddha Purnima is being celebrated across Bangladesh today with prayers, rituals and cultural events, marking the birth, enlightenment and passing of Gautama Buddha.

The day is a public holiday and is observed by Buddhist communities with religious devotion in temples, monasteries and educational institutions.

The celebrations began early in the morning with hoisting of national and religious flags, followed by recitation from the Tripitaka. Devotees are taking part in prayers, alms-giving, religious discussions and observing key teachings.

Special rituals such as Sanghadana, Panchashila and Asthashila are being observed, while many are also joining Pradip Puja and other traditional practices.
In the evening, colourful paper lanterns, known locally as fanush, are released into the sky as part of the celebrations.

Messages from President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman highlighted the values of peace, compassion and harmony taught by Buddha.

They said Bangladesh continues to uphold religious harmony and remains committed to ensuring equal rights and freedom for all communities.
