The Bangladesh Petrol Pump and Tank-Lorry Owners Unity Council has announced an eight-hour nationwide work suspension on May 25, citing a 10-point list of demands, including a 7% commission on fuel sales.

At a press briefing on Sunday, Joint Convener Syed Sazzadul Karim Kabul outlined the group‍‍`s concerns. He stated that the current government directive from September 26, 2023, sets the fuel commission at 5% for petrol and octane, and 3% for diesel, based on depot rates.

“Until now, our businesses have operated with dealership, explosives, and trade licenses,” he said.

However, the council objects to new licensing requirements recently introduced, which include approvals from the Department of Environment, Fire Service, Factory Inspection, BSTI, and BRC.

Kabul described these additions as excessive and unjustified, noting that members have been protesting them for some time.

As a final appeal, Kabul said: “Based on the collective decision of fuel traders and association leaders on May 10, we urge the government to meet our demands by May 24.”

Failing that, all petrol pumps and tank-lorry operations across the country will be halted from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM on May 25 as a symbolic protest.

During this period, fuel supply, sales, and transportation will be suspended, except for fuel delivery needed for Hajj and international flights, which will continue uninterrupted.
