No discussion held with chief adviser on election date or timeline: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin on Tuesday clarified that no discussion took place regarding the date or possible timeline of the upcoming national election during his recent courtesy meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.

Speaking to reporters at his office in the Election Commission headquarters, the CEC said the meeting focused on general election preparedness, not specific timelines.

The meeting between the CEC and the Chief Adviser took place last Thursday at the state guesthouse Jamuna.

However, no official statement had been released by either the Chief Adviser’s office or the Election Commission until now.

“It was a courtesy meeting. Even so, some matters were discussed. The Chief Adviser inquired about the commission’s preparations for the election,” said the CEC, adding that the Election Commission is proceeding with full preparations for the upcoming vote.

When asked whether a possible February election timeline—mentioned in a recent joint statement following a meeting between BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman and foreign interlocutors in London—was discussed with the Chief Adviser, the CEC firmly denied it.

“There was no conversation regarding the election’s possible schedule with the Chief Adviser,” he stated.

The CEC also noted that the commission is preparing for an election to be held anytime between February and April.

“The official date and election schedule will be announced by the Election Commission at the appropriate time,” he added.
