Google has announced that it will no longer provide Chrome updates for smartphones running Android 8.0 (Oreo) and Android 9.0 (Pie).
The final supported version will be Chrome 138, with Chrome 139—set to roll out on August 5, 2025—requiring Android 10 or later, according to a notice shared on the Google Chrome Help Community.
As reported by Hindustan Times, while users on older Android versions will still be able to use Chrome version 138 for basic browsing, they will miss out on future features and security updates. Google has not yet confirmed when complete support for version 138 will be withdrawn.
The company recommends that users update their Android operating systems or consider newer devices to ensure compatibility and security.
This change is expected to affect millions of users globally who have yet to upgrade from older Android systems. Smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S8, Pixel 2, and other devices released before 2019 are likely to be impacted.
