Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered immediate steps after reports showed students taking SSC exams in waterlogged classrooms in Cumilla.
The directive came after images circulated in the media of examinees at Ishwar Pathshala High School sitting in water during Tuesday’s exam, with some placing their feet on benches.
Cumilla City Corporation administrator Md Yousuf Molla said the prime minister called him on Wednesday morning to ask about the situation and instructed him to fix the problem quickly.
He said steps were taken right away, including clearing blocked canals to improve water flow in the area.
The administrator added that he visited the school and nearby locations and is continuing inspections to prevent further waterlogging.
According to him, conditions have already improved, with no new waterlogging reported despite ongoing rainfall.
Officials said drainage in the city had been disrupted due to waste blocking canals, especially the Guingajhuri canal, which connects to the Dakatia River. Cleanup work is now underway.
School authorities said more than 600 students are sitting for exams at the centre, including over 200 in rooms where water had entered during the English exam.
Authorities said further measures will be taken to ensure a safe and proper environment for students during the remaining exams.
