Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday said the Family Card programme will not put pressure on the national budget and will not clash with other welfare services.
Speaking in parliament, he described the scheme as a long-term investment, saying it could help reduce inflation and support local businesses.
He said the programme will be introduced in phases, starting with poor and vulnerable families, and will gradually expand to reach about four crore households across the country.
The prime minister noted that the rollout will depend on proper data collection and careful planning, adding that it cannot be implemented all at once.
He also said the government will review existing social safety programmes to remove duplicate benefits, ensuring that support reaches the right people.
According to him, the scheme will not increase inflation because no extra money will be printed. Instead, it will encourage spending on essential goods, most of which are locally produced.
He added that this could help strengthen the rural economy and create more jobs by boosting demand for local products.
