FIFA has approved an increase in financial support for teams taking part in the 2026 World Cup, raising the total to $871 million.
The decision was made at a meeting of the FIFA Council and reflects a 15 percent rise in funds for the 48 participating teams.
Under the new plan, the preparation fund for each team will increase from $1.5 million to $2.5 million, while the qualification fund will rise from $9 million to $10 million. Additional support, including travel and ticket costs, has also been increased.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the organisation is in a strong financial position and is able to invest more back into football worldwide.
The council also agreed to allow an Afghan women’s refugee team to take part in official FIFA competitions under updated rules.
In another change, yellow cards received during the 2026 World Cup will be cleared after the group stage and again after the quarterfinals.
The next FIFA presidential election, covering the 2027–2031 term, will take place in 2027, with the election process set to begin in April 2026.
