Bus fares on city and inter-district routes have been increased by 11 paisa per kilometre following a recent rise in diesel prices, the government announced on Thursday.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam said the new rates will apply to services in Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas as well as on inter-district routes.

Under the revised structure, fares in the two metropolitan areas have increased to Tk 2.53 per kilometre, while inter-district bus fares for 52-seat coaches now stand at Tk 2.23 per kilometre. In areas under the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority, fares have also been adjusted upward.

However, the minimum fare remains unchanged at Tk 10 in metropolitan areas and Tk 8 outside.

The minister clarified that the adjustment applies only to diesel-run buses, with fares for CNG-operated services remaining the same.

He said transport operators had sought a larger increase, citing rising operational costs, but the government limited the adjustment considering public interest.

The fare revision follows a Tk 15 per litre increase in diesel prices and has been made under an existing pricing formula, which will be used for future adjustments.

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority will oversee implementation, with authorities warning of strict monitoring to prevent overcharging.
