Football’s law-making body International Football Association Board has updated red card rules following recent controversies in international matches.

Under the new guidelines, players can be sent off if they cover their mouths while arguing with opponents. Officials say the move is aimed at stopping hidden verbal abuse, though its use will depend on tournament organisers such as FIFA.

The change comes after an incident involving Gianluca Prestianni, who was accused of using offensive language during a match against Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior. He later received a suspension from UEFA for verbal abuse.

IFAB has also approved another rule allowing referees to show red cards to players who walk off the field in protest. Team officials who encourage such actions can face the same punishment.

This follows a major incident during the Africa Cup of Nations final, where Senegal players left the pitch to protest a decision, leading to a long delay.

Officials said the updated rules will be applied in upcoming competitions, including the next World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The changes aim to improve discipline and prevent disruptive behaviour on the field.
