A fire broke out at an oil-related facility in Russia’s Perm region on Wednesday after what Ukraine said was a long-range drone strike deep inside Russian territory.
Regional governor Dmitry Makhonin confirmed that a drone hit an industrial site, causing a blaze, but did not give further details. Russian media reported the site could be a pumping station or storage facility.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attack was part of efforts to extend the reach of Ukrainian strikes and target Russia’s energy sector. He said the distance of the strike was more than 1,500 kilometres.
The incident comes as drone warfare continues to shape the conflict, with both sides increasing long-range attacks. Ukraine has focused on hitting energy infrastructure, aiming to disrupt Russia’s revenue sources.
A day earlier, Ukraine also struck an oil facility in Tuapse on Russia’s Black Sea coast, prompting evacuations. Russian authorities later said that fire had been brought under control.
Russia’s defence ministry said its air defences shot down dozens of Ukrainian drones overnight across several regions and Crimea.
At the same time, Russian forces carried out their own drone attacks on Ukraine. Ukrainian officials reported damage and injuries in areas including Kharkiv, Sumy and Odesa.
Officials said the situation remains tense, with both sides continuing cross-border strikes as the war enters another year.
